What grab bar should I order?

Answer 3 quick questions and we'll tell you the right model for your wall, no guesswork.

Step 1 of 3
Step 1 of 3
What type of wall are you mounting to?
This determines your installation method and hardware needs.
Step 2 of 3
What is your wall stud spacing?
Measure center-to-center with a stud finder. Most homes are 16" on center.
Step 3 of 3
What bar length feels right for your space?
Longer bars offer more reach. Shorter bars work in tighter spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you order

Sizing, installation, returns, and the questions our customers ask most often.

Sizing & Stud Spacing
What do the model numbers 12S, 16S, 24S, and 32S mean?
+

The number is the exact hole-to-hole distance in inches between the two mounting screws. That distance must match your wall's solid backing.

How do I find my stud spacing?
+
1
Get a stud finder. Any hardware store sells them for under $15.
2
Run it along the wall at your install height. Mark the center of each stud with a pencil.
3
Measure center-to-center. The distance between two adjacent stud marks is your stud spacing.
4
Match that number to the right bar. 16" picks the 16S or 32S. 24" picks the 24S. Any spacing picks the 12S with blocking.
Quick tip: Most U.S. homes built after 1950 use 16" OC stud spacing. Older and custom homes often use 24" OC.
What happens if I order the wrong size?
+

The screws will miss the studs entirely. A grab bar screwed only into drywall cannot support body weight. It will pull out of the wall and create a serious fall risk.

This is the #1 reason for returns. Two minutes of measuring before you order prevents the hassle entirely. Drywall alone cannot hold a grab bar under load.
Will the 32S work on 24" OC stud walls?
+

No. The 32S is designed for 16" OC walls only. It spans exactly two 16" bays (16" + 16" = 32"). On a 24" OC wall the holes will not align with any studs.

If your studs are 24" OC, order the 24S, not the 32S.
The 12S & Wood Blocking
What is "wood blocking" and why does the 12S need it?
+

Wood blocking is a solid piece of lumber, typically a 2x6 or 2x4 board, screwed horizontally between two studs behind your wall surface. It gives the mounting screws something solid to grab when the bar's hole spacing doesn't line up with any single pair of studs.

The 12S has a 12" hole spacing, which is narrower than any standard stud spacing. Both screws will always land between studs unless blocking is added first.

Blocking is just as strong as direct stud mount. Once the blocking is screwed to both studs, the 12S mounts into solid wood and holds up to the same load as any other bar in the line.
How do I install blocking for the 12S?
+
1
Locate two adjacent studs with a stud finder and mark their centers.
2
Cut a 2x6 board to fit snugly between the two studs at your intended install height.
3
Screw the blocking board securely to both studs with structural screws or lag bolts.
4
Mount the 12S through the wall surface into the solid blocking. Both screws must penetrate the wood.
Why the 12S is flexible: It works with any stud spacing (16" or 24" OC) because the blocking spans the gap regardless.
Installation
Can I install a grab bar into drywall anchors instead of studs?
+
No. Drywall anchors are not rated for the dynamic lateral and vertical loads a grab bar experiences during use. A person bracing a fall can apply 250 to 600+ lbs of force instantaneously. Drywall anchors will fail.

Always fasten into solid wood studs or properly installed blocking. This is a safety requirement, not a recommendation.

How much weight can the grab bars hold?
+

The 16S, 24S, and 32S are rated to hold up to 600 lbs when properly installed into solid wood studs. The 12S achieves the same rating when installed into correctly secured wood blocking.

The strength is in the install. Holding capacity comes from the fastener-to-stud connection, not from the bar itself. A bar in drywall holds nothing. A bar in solid wood holds 600 lbs.
Do the bars meet ADA requirements?
+

Yes. Extend-A-Hand grab bars are ADA-compliant and built to dimensional and load requirements specified in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. They are manufactured by Mountain Manufacturing LLC under ISO 13485:2016 certification, the medical device quality management standard.

How do I install on tile or masonry?
+

Tile over wood studs: Use a 1/4" carbide or diamond bit through the tile only, then switch to a 3/16" wood bit into the stud. Apply silicone sealant in each hole and around each screw before driving, to seal the wall cavity from water.

Masonry, concrete, or brick: Use rated masonry anchors sized for the bar and expected load. Drill pilot holes with a carbide masonry bit. Do not use standard drywall anchors in masonry under any circumstance.

The selector at the top of this page will adjust your tool list automatically based on your wall type.
Do I need any special tools to install?
+

Base tools (all installs): stud finder, level, pencil, tape measure, drill, 3/16" drill bit, #3 Phillips screwdriver (manual), safety glasses.

If installing a 12S with blocking: add 2x4 lumber cut to length, lag bolts or structural screws, and a saw.

If installing on tile: add a 1/4" carbide or diamond bit, silicone sealant, masking tape, water for cooling the bit.

If installing on masonry: add a carbide masonry bit, rated masonry anchors, and a hammer.

Important: Drive the final screws with a manual #3 Phillips screwdriver, not a power drill. Over-torquing strips the head and can damage the mounting plate.
Ordering, Returns & Warranty

What does the 3-year warranty cover?
+

The 3-year warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover damage resulting from improper installation, specifically installation into drywall without solid backing or incorrect stud alignment.

Because these bars are manufactured in-house under ISO 13485:2016 standards, material and machining defects are rare. If you ever have a concern, contact us directly and we'll make it right.

I'm not sure which size I need. Can I contact you before ordering?
